If your company has a few legacy systems that cannot be replaced any time soon, you already know the tension: business wants faster changes, and those systems were not designed for quick evolution.
Event-driven integration can be a nice middle ground. You do not have to rewrite everything, but you can still make the seams between systems more flexible.
The big win is decoupling. Instead of every system waiting synchronously on every other system, producers publish events and consumers react on their own timeline. That lowers coordination overhead and usually makes change easier to roll out safely.
That said, event-driven architecture only feels easy when a few fundamentals are handled up front.
First, event contracts need real ownership. If schema changes are informal, downstream breakages become inevitable and hard to debug. Versioning and compatibility rules should be explicit.
Second, idempotency is not optional. Distributed systems deliver duplicates, retries, and out-of-order events. Consumers need to process safely under those normal conditions.
Third, observability has to be there from day one. You want clear answers to basic questions: where was the event published, which service consumed it, where did it fail, and what happened on retry.
A practical rollout can stay pretty lightweight:
- Pick one high-value integration boundary first
- Define schema ownership and version rules
- Add dead-letter handling immediately
- Track latency and failure rates
- Expand once operating confidence is solid
Event-driven systems are not a cure-all. You trade some synchronous simplicity for operational complexity. But for organizations modernizing around legacy constraints, it is often one of the most practical paths forward.
The teams that do this well usually have shared ownership: platform teams define reliable standards, and domain teams stay accountable for event quality and behavior.
